About our TE Social Competence Program

Specifically for youth 12-16 with high-functioning autism or related disorders (i.e., Asperger syndrome, PDD-NOS, ADHD or other developmental disabilities with strong communication skills) , this program primarily focuses on drama and is complemented by music and art to help students accurately perceive and respond to nonverbal aspects of social interactions, such as facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice.

Individuals will have the opportunity to participate in process dramas and take on roles that explore various outcomes. During role plays, they will learn to divide complex social interactions into sequential parts, discuss the emotions involved, and act out a variety of possible responses. They also learn practical skills for dealing with teasing and understanding complex social cues.

Program is based on the "Social Competence Intervention Program" by Dr. Laura A. Guli, Dr. Alison D. Wilkinson, and Dr. Margaret Semrud-Clikeman.

Programs Title

Therapy Express Summer Camps are half-day, week-long therapeutic expressive arts experiences for children and adolescents coping with communication and social challenges.

First developed by a team of professionals at JB Music Therapy Inc., in Calgary, Alberta, Therapy Express focuses on three core curriculum aspects - music therapy, art and drama for the purpose of engaging children and adolescents in activities which promote creative self-expression.

Daily Activities
The camp's daily activities are designed to follow the same basic structure each day. The purpose of this is to offer predictability that makes it easier for the children to transition from one activity to the next. The program provides opportunities for:

  • Music, drama and art sessions that encourage focus for 30-minutes on specific tasks.
  • Large motor activities such as parachute games and movement activities.
  • Self-directed play to encourage choice-making and social interaction.
  • Circle time for sing-a-longs and large group interaction.
  • Snack time / Break time
  • Relaxation to help with over-stimulation

Led by a highly specialized staff of professional therapists and practitioners with years of experience working with children & youth with special needs, Therapy Express is available for:

  • Preschoolers (6 and under)
  • Elementary age children (7-12)
  • Teens (13-17)

Therapy Express Program Goals:

  • To provide opportunities for expressive & receptive communication
  • To increase social awareness and interaction with same age peers
  • To promote creative self-expression
